What?I grew up in a family where being a servant of others was always the way to live but I didn’t really know what that truly meant until I came to Virginia Tech and got involved with the Giving Tree Food Pantry. I actually went for the first time as a requirement for one of my classes but fell in love with the feeling that came with helping people in such great need. It warmed my heart to share an hour of my week with people that simply needed the basic necessities to feed their children and love ones. In several visits to the food pantry I have come to realize the importance and meaning of citizenship and that is service.

So What? |
It was once said that “service is the rent we pay for living on this earth” and our responsibility as a citizen of this country is to give in a way that furthers our nation’s own ability to be the best we can be. Volunteering and donating a very small portion of my time has allowed me to realize the significance and impact one person can have when they realize that social change isn’t about them but rather about progressing mankind and allowing everyone to have the same opportunity to grow and succeed.

Now What? |
This experience and the thought behind the citizenship component of the social change model has molded my view of service and shaped the way I think about the moral responsibility that we have to uphold our duty to give and serve whenever possible. Citizenship and service truly make the world go around and it’s our job to ensure that that value continues to drive and motivate generations to come so that we can further develop our own ability to be the best we can be.
