What?Understanding who you are and why you do what you do is the most key component of creating change and being a leader. When many people come to college they struggle with finding the right the right friends, the right clubs and the right places to be because they are unconscious of their selves. When I came to Virginia Tech I was the same way. I had no friends, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I didn’t know how to get started with things outside the classroom. Being in RLC my freshmen year luckily forced me to solve a few of these issues and truly reflect on the person I was and the person I wanted to become. It was through the help of these individuals that I was able to understand what I wanted to do but more importantly the strengths that made me, me.

So What? |
Establishing an understanding of me, made the rest of my college experience so much simpler. As I understood my values and aspirations I began to begin to put those to use through very focused efforts in school work and extracurricular. Because I understood that I value the relationships around me I vowed to not stretch myself to thin but to rather dive in and create deeper and more meaningful relationships with a few groups rather than many.

Now What? |
While, I don’t know that I understand every component of what makes me the person I am, I have become aware and appreciative of the values and strengths that make me different from everyone else. Through many personality tests, friendships and most importantly, personal reflection I have been able to understand the Brian Walsh that exists today and will use those opportunities to continue to get to know him in the future. Consciousness of self will be what I lean on to make the right decisions in the future and to guide me through the good and bad times just as it has at Virginia Tech.
