What?Every leadership class that I’ve ever taken we’ve spent a great deal of time talking about vision and goals for team success. While it sounds like a simple concept and an easy one to enact, it’s much harder than that. While I’ve worked on many teams that have came together for the same purpose and carried that through, none may be as memorable as the group I worked with the Spring semester of 2015 during our Leadership 3304 class. This group was randomly assigned but from day one we were completely on the same page. We established a few goals together but deeper than those goals was an innate desire to achieve our purpose and not let each other down. That desire and drive stayed with the team throughout the entire semester and ultimately lead to us achieving great grades and real friendships.

So What? |
While this group was only for a semester it taught me a lot about having a common purpose that everyone on the team can get behind and commit to throughout the entirety of the teams existence. Most of us came together to get a good grade in the class, but that desire turned into a deeper purpose of doing well for each other and motivating one another to be the best we could be all the time. That idea became a part of our thought processes and daily interactions everyday and ultimately allowed us to achieve that goal of doing well and having a great time doing it together.

Now What? |
The vision and goal discussions that are a part of every leadership class really are a foundational piece to group success. Working with the group I’ve realized the importance of dynamic discussions before work begins and plan on definitely using that tool with future teams that I am engaged with. Since our team took the time to get to know one another and establish a common purpose we were able to be successful. All teams, big or small, don’t necessarily have to agree on everything but must have the same end goal and purpose in mind.
