What?In February of 2015 I decided to work on campus through Dining Services and was hired to work at Qdoba in Turner Place. I was totally stoked to work there because I was poor and excited to make some money and I absolutely love any and all Mexican food. I took the morning shift, which had me working from 7am to noon, and only took two shifts per workweek. The first couple weeks on the job were not glamorous but fun. I enjoyed my time there and liked the people that I worked with. However, as the semester went on and more opportunities came my way, I quickly felt myself failing to stay committed to my work at Qdoba. I started picking sleep and a second job that I got over going to work and eventually missed too many days.

So What? |
While my time at Qdoba definitely didn’t end the way that I expected it to in the beginning it makes perfect sense because of the lack of commitment that I had towards the work I was doing. I realized that committing yourself to something is making an investment that can pay off greatly if you follow through with it. I realized that when we make decisions based off of temporary desires rather than long-term, values based factors we aren’t happy and therefore don’t give 100% to the job.

Now What? |
All in all, the opportunity to work for dining services at Virginia Tech was a good experience and definitely taught me a lot. Since working at Qdoba, I have vowed to never work another job that I wasn’t 110% committed to. Commitment is so vital in following through with the plans to reach any vision and I will always look for the level of commitment to be a direct reflection of my personal values. Even in looking for job opportunities for the future, I have taken it from a very foundational piece in asking what makes me happy and what I enjoy doing so that whatever job I land in, I know I will be totally committed.
